Ever wondered just how big the retail sector is in NZ? Newly released data shows the broad scope of the country’s second largest industry.
A recent look into the retail industry has revealed that it is the second largest industry in New Zealand; second only to Agriculture. More than 196,000 people are employed within retail; that’s 10% of the country’s workforce!
Retail is a great industry because of it’s range of different opportunities… there’s a job out there for everyone! There are shop front roles like shop assistants, check-out operators and store management to name a few. However, a lot of people forget about those working behind the scenes. Retail also offers a huge variety of support office roles. From area managers, reception and warehousing through to IT, accounting, marketing, advertising and buying; all the way up to CEO’s! Is it any wonder that it is such a large industry?
The same study also looked into the different types of people working within retail – there are males and females of all backgrounds, age groups and ethnicities. The industry has roughly an even split when it comes to gender - 56% of employees are female and 44% male. There is also a range of age with19% of employees being under 25, with the median age of those in the industry being 34.
There are around 14,500 retail businesses with more than 33,600 retail outlets throughout the country, with 35% of those located in Auckland. These are mostly made up of retail outlets and supermarkets.
Retail offers real career progression opportunities and has a job for everyone. It’s a great industry to get into and there are always lots of great jobs available.
