NZ’s hospitality industry has really picked up it’s game since the RWC. There have been great venue’s popping up, and many existing places had a face lift in prep for the event. It’s great to see that it’s carrying on! The ITU have praised NZ after the recent Triathlon World Cup Event over the weekend.
Looking through the papers and magazines, it’s great to see that NZ’s perception of hospitality is really picking up. Other than the regular columns, it used to be that you’d be hard pressed to find a positive story about the industry (except for the odd person complaining about poor service or a scandel). Now they’re coming out left right and centre. It’s great to see that everyone is maintaining the excellent standard that we all saw at the Rugby World Cup!And we’ve got events down too!
The International Triathlon Union has lauded Auckland’s hosting of yesterday’s World Cup event, suggesting New Zealand will become a more regular destination for the sport’s key global dates.
ITU technical delegate Thanos Nikopoulos heaped praise on the planning and execution of the event, with triathlon’s highlight World Cup grand final scheduled for Auckland in October next year.
“The ITU is definitely pleased with Auckland, it’s been really successful,” Nikopoulos told Fairfax Media.
“The most important thing is that we managed to test most of the operations we are going to have here next year.
“The grand final is a different footprint, and it has huge impact for New Zealand. There will be double the number of athletes probably.
“But Auckland and New Zealand has shown it can pull these events off in an excellent way.”
Nikopoulos, who travels the globe with ITU events, said it was one of the best world cup stages he had ever seen and New Zealand had passed a major test ahead of hosting the 2012 October grand final.
“For a world cup, it’s one of the best we have seen,” he said. “I believe next year will be one of the best world championships we have ever had.
“This was a very important test for that event because 70 per cent of it has now been seen. I’m confident the 2012 grand final in New Zealand will be a success.
“For Auckland, the city has shown good commitment, from the organising committee and from the public. This city has a brilliant future in triathlon.”
Chief executive of the 2012 world championship, and former Triathlon New Zealand chief, Dave Beeche said while no event could be perfect, yesterday went “fantastically well”.
“It was an unbelievable success, I couldn’t have hoped for more really,” Beeche said.
“I’d say around 20,000 people turned out. I walked the length of Queen Street and there were people everywhere.
“I had a chat with [French triathlete] Laurent Vidal and he reckons the only crowd bigger than this on the whole world circuit is Hamburg, where they get over 60,000. He says Auckland has to stay on the ITU circuit.”
